About
Carissa Grouell is a producer, performer, composer and sound installation artist based in Portland, Oregon. She is deeply interested in sonic experimentation, both technologically and through the incorporation of sounds from around the world. Carissa’s work embraces textures and otherworldly ambience to create ethereal atmospheres and lush, intricate soundscapes that transport listeners to faraway times and spaces.
Born in San Diego, California to a musical home, Carissa began her musical experimentation drumming on pots and pans with wooden spoons. She eventually graduated to a full drum kit and as a teenager taught herself to play a handful of other instruments.
A deep desire to learn more about production techniques, composition, and music technology led her to enroll at Portland Community College in 2021. She graduated with a degree of Applied Science in Music and Sonic Art. From there she began recording and producing tracks for local artists such as EpicBunny and Corey Bakarich. She produces her own music under the name Creatures Kissing. Carissa has studied Japanese Taiko and Indonesian Gamelan and performed in both Taiko and Gamelan ensembles at Portland State University. She recently contributed sound production to an installation entitled HOME:LOST - a collaboration between the Sonic Arts and Theater departments at Portland State. The installation explored themes of climate change, houselessness, and war and conflict.
Carissa is a senior at Portland State University and will graduate in 2025 with a BS in Sonic Art and Music Production.
